As an observation to the above Cherry County Tax allocations,
Cody, Crookston, Kilgore, and Merriman collect three times
the amount of property tax that Wood Lake does. When the village only
accepts the minimum tax percentage, then services such
as street signs, removal of dangerous trees, adding improved hard service roads,
auditing the treasurer books and other services
allows for bad management practices to continue on.
All public services
that collect taxes must have the books audited annually,
as mistakes can and do take place. This practice is not satisfactory to
the public that it serves when the audit is waivered yearly. Currently Wood Lake collects
around $2500.00 in property tax. As it appears three months of bill paying
uses this base. It is knowledge that the state revenue
could be removed and taken by the County Commissioners for use; but is presently
not. Something to think about for residents of
Wood Lake. Most of us do not desire to have property tax raised; however, a
village must think about the safety of its citizens
and the maintenance of streets, parks and other areas of concern to include
yearly audits.
